Will Generation Troubleshooting Help

Find solutions to common will generation issues including save errors, browser compatibility problems, and progress recovery.

Progress not saving

If you see an error when trying to save your will generation progress, don't worry. Your data is protected by automatic local backup.

How auto-save works

  • Your answers save on their own: the step saves about once a minute while you work, once you have paused typing, and again whenever you click "Continue" or navigate away. There is no separate "Save" button for the step
  • Dual-layer protection: data saved to both server and browser local storage
  • Instant recovery: if server save fails, local backup keeps you going
  • Cross-device sync: server saves work across all your devices

"Failed to Save Progress" error

  1. Check your internet connection: ensure you're connected to WiFi or mobile data
  2. Your data is safe locally: even if server save fails, your answers are stored in browser storage
  3. Retry the save: click "Continue" again once connection is restored
  4. Don't close the browser tab: keep the window open until save succeeds
  5. Complete anything the step asks for: if a "Complete Required Information" message appears, choose "Fix changes" to go back and fill in the highlighted fields
  6. Contact us if persistent: if a step will not load at all, its error card offers a "Contact Us" button that opens the contact form with the error details filled in for you

Your data is protected

Local storage acts as an automatic backup. Even if you close your browser, your answers are preserved and will be synced when you return.

Local storage backup

Your browser's local storage provides an automatic safety net for your will generation progress.

What is local storage?

  • Browser-based storage: data stored directly on your device (not on our servers)
  • Persistent across sessions: data remains even if you close the browser
  • Device-specific: local data only available on the device where you entered it
  • Automatic sync: system tries to sync local data to server when connection restores

Recovering from local storage

  1. Return to the will generation page on the same device and browser
  2. Choose "Continue" when the "Continue Where You Left Off?" prompt appears. Choosing "Start Fresh" discards the saved answers, so only use it if you want to begin again
  3. The system will automatically detect local backup and restore your answers
  4. Once connection is stable, data will sync to server for cross-device access

Important

Local storage is tied to a specific browser on a specific device. To access your will on multiple devices, ensure server save succeeds at least once.

Network and connectivity problems

"Connection Lost" or timeout errors

  1. Check WiFi/mobile data: ensure you have an active internet connection
  2. Try a different network: switch between WiFi and mobile data
  3. Disable VPN: some VPN configurations can interfere with saves
  4. Check firewall settings: corporate/school networks may block certain connections
  5. Wait and retry: temporary server issues usually resolve within minutes

"Request Timed Out" error

  1. Your answers are saved locally: safe to retry
  2. Check network speed: slow connections may timeout on large saves
  3. Refresh the page and resume: local storage will restore your progress
  4. Try during off-peak hours if issue persists

Slow connection?

The system adapts to your network speed. Large step saves, such as the asset allocation step with many beneficiaries, may take longer on slow connections.

Browser storage issues

"Local Storage Disabled" warning

  1. Enable local storage in browser settings:
    • Chrome/Edge: Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → ensure "Local storage" is allowed
    • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → uncheck "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed"
    • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → uncheck "Block all cookies"
  2. Disable private/incognito mode: local storage is cleared when these modes close
  3. Allow cookies for orchard72.com: required for both local storage and server saves
  4. Clear corrupt storage: if issues persist, clear browser data for orchard72.com and start fresh

"Storage Quota Exceeded" error

  1. Browser storage limit reached (usually 5-10 MB per site)
  2. Clear browser cache and cookies for orchard72.com
  3. Close other tabs from orchard72.com (each tab uses storage)
  4. Complete current step to sync to server, clearing local queue

Private/Incognito mode

Not recommended for will generation. All local data is lost when you close the window, and server saves may fail if cookies are blocked.

Problems generating your draft

Step 11 is where your answers are turned into a draft will. If something stops that happening, the page tells you which of these it is.

"Fix these first" checks

A short list of checks has to pass before drafting starts. Each item links you straight to the step that needs attention:

  • An executor has been named, and the executor step is not left declared but empty
  • A guardian has been named where you have minor children
  • No one recorded as a witness is also a beneficiary
  • Every beneficiary in your allocations still resolves to a person or organisation
  • A state or region has been chosen for wills in the United States, Australia or Canada

"Generation timed out"

  1. Your answers are safe. Nothing you entered is lost when a draft times out
  2. Use "Try again" on the timeout card. Drafting sometimes takes longer when the service is busy
  3. If it times out repeatedly, use "Contact support" on the same card rather than retrying indefinitely

Regenerating a draft

Once you have a draft, "Regenerate draft" redrafts it from your current answers. Each regeneration uses one of the generations included with your plan, and the page tells you when the allowance for that will has run out.

If payment has not gone through

Drafting is only started once the will has been paid for, so if checkout was not completed you are asked to pay before the draft is created rather than shown an error.

Recovering lost progress

"I Lost My Progress!"

  1. Return to the same browser and device: local storage is device-specific
  2. Go to the will generation start page: look for the "Continue Where You Left Off?" prompt, which shows the step you reached, how far through you were, and when it was last saved
  3. Check if you were signed in: server-saved progress requires authentication
  4. Try the original tab/window: if still open, your progress is definitely there
  5. Look for draft wills on the "Your Wills" page: completed sessions are saved as drafts
  6. Mind the three-day window: if you have not signed in, an unfinished session is kept for three days. Signing in stores your progress on our servers instead

Progress not showing after browser restart

  1. Ensure you're using the same browser (Chrome vs. Safari are separate)
  2. Check browser didn't clear data: some browsers clear storage on close if configured
  3. Verify you weren't in private/incognito mode
  4. Check the "Your Wills" page: it may have saved to server before you noticed

When to contact support

  • Save errors persist after trying all troubleshooting steps
  • You see "Session expired" errors repeatedly
  • Local storage won't enable despite correct settings
  • Progress disappeared despite following recovery steps
  • You need help migrating data to a different device

Prevention tip

Sign in before starting will generation. Authenticated saves sync across devices and are more reliable than anonymous local-only saves.
