Office Types
When adding offices to your application, you’ll choose an office type. This guide explains the differences between each type.
Last reviewed
Operational
Where you physically work and meet clients. This is your day-to-day working location. It may or may not be the same as your registered address.
Registered
Your official business address for legal correspondence and regulatory purposes. This is the address on your practising certificate.
Both
A full-service location that serves as both your operational base and registered address. Most traditional law firm offices fall into this category.
Headquarters (Primary Office)
You can designate one office as your headquarters or primary office. This is typically where you want clients to contact you first, or where your main business operations are centred.
Only one office can be your headquarters. If you have multiple offices, the headquarters designation helps indicate which one is your primary location.
Directory Listing
Your directory listing shows each office’s name, address, office type, headquarters status and the jurisdictions it serves. Office email addresses and phone numbers are not published: prospective clients get in touch through the contact buttons on your profile.
Offices are optional
You do not have to add an office at all. An online-only practice is perfectly valid, and your application will not be held up for want of a physical address.
The same goes for each jurisdiction: leave one without an office if you serve clients there online.
Office Contact Details
Each office has its own contact email, which is required, and an optional phone number. These are used by our team when we need to reach that location; they are not shown on your public directory listing.
Your application contact details are separate again, and are also internal. See our Contact Types guide for more information on which details go where.
Multiple Offices
You can add as many offices as you need. Each office can be linked to one or more jurisdictions, allowing you to show which offices serve which legal jurisdictions.
For example, you might have:
- A London office (headquarters) serving England & Wales
- An Edinburgh office serving Scotland
- A Belfast office serving Northern Ireland
