Conversations

Your in-app message threads, and the controls you have over each one.

What the Conversations Page Shows

One List, One Card per Thread

Conversations lists every message thread you are a participant in, most recently active first. Each card shows the other participant, the subject, a preview of the last message, when it arrived, and how many messages in that thread you have not read yet.

What Each Card Can Tell You

  • An unread count, so you can see at a glance where a reply is waiting
  • A draft marker, if you started a reply in that thread and never sent it
  • An archived marker, once you have moved the thread out of your main view
  • A blocked marker, if you have blocked the other participant in that thread
  • A frozen marker, if the thread has been frozen by our team

Who Can Use It

Conversations is available to everyone signed in. What you see inside it differs by the view you are working in: legal professionals and charity users see their client and colleague threads, while people using the site to plan their own affairs see their threads with professionals.

Starting a New Thread

Use New Message at the top of the list to open a new thread. If your list is still empty, the empty state itself gives you the same starting point.

Finding the Thread You Want

Filter Chips (Professional View)

In the professional view the list carries three chips above it: All, Clients and Colleagues. Clients narrows the list to threads with the people you are advising; Colleagues narrows it to threads with other professionals. The chips are not shown outside the professional view, because there is only one kind of thread to see there.

Search

The search box filters the threads already on screen by participant name, subject and the preview of the last message. It is a narrowing tool for a list you can see, not a search of every message you have ever sent.

Pending Connection Requests

If you have sent an approach to a professional and they have not responded yet, it appears in your list as a Connection request card marked as awaiting a response, so a request in flight is not invisible while you wait. Approaches have their own page with fuller detail.

Mute, Archive, Block and Report

Each card has an overflow menu with four actions. They do different things, and the difference matters.

Mute

Stops notifications for that thread. The thread stays in your list and new messages still arrive; you simply are not alerted about them. Unmuting from the same menu restores notifications.

Archive

Moves a finished thread out of the way without deleting anything. The history is preserved and the thread can be brought back.

Block

Applies to that participant, for you. Blocking here is a personal setting on the thread, and it is separate from the professional-side block that a legal professional can apply when declining an approach.

Report

Raises the thread with our team. Use it for content you believe breaches our acceptable use rules rather than for a conversation you simply want to end, which is what archive and block are for.

Muting Is Not Blocking

Muting only silences alerts. If you want the other person to stop reaching you, block them rather than muting the thread.

Frozen Threads

A thread can be frozen so that no further messages can be sent in it. This happens when a professional declines an approach and blocks the person at the same time, and it can also be applied by our team. A frozen thread stays readable, so the history is not lost, but neither participant can reopen it from the conversation itself.

You cannot unfreeze a thread yourself: The controls on the card will not reopen it. If you believe a thread was frozen in error, contact support rather than starting a second thread with the same person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does archiving delete the messages?

No. Archiving moves the thread out of your working view. The messages are still there.

Is the other person told when I mute, archive or block them?

No. These are controls on your own view of the thread, and they are not announced to the other participant.

Why can I not see the Clients and Colleagues chips?

They only appear in the professional view. If you are using the site to plan your own affairs, every thread in your list is with a professional, so there is nothing to split.

Why does a thread show a subject I did not write?

Some threads are opened from another part of the site and are given an automatic subject. Where that is the case the card leaves the subject line out rather than showing you wording nobody chose.
