Ringgit Remains Resilient, Supported by Domestic Factors

BondsMonetary Policy

The Malaysian ringgit opened higher against the US dollar and several major currencies on Friday, as movements in US Treasury bond yields continued to influence market sentiment. At 8:00 a.m., the ringgit strengthened to 4.0810/4.0865 against the US dollar, up from 4.0840/4.0880 at Thursday's close. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid stated that US Treasury bond yield movements remain a key factor influencing market sentiment. The 30-year US bond yield rose by eight basis points to 5.48%—a two-decade high—reflecting an increase in the inflation risk premium amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia. He noted that this situation also supported the US dollar, with the US Dollar Index (DXY) rising 0.19% to 101.285 points, amidst expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would maintain a tighter monetary policy. Afzanizam expects the ringgit to trade within the RM4.08 to RM4.10 range against the US dollar today. Malaysian Economy Remains Resilient On the domestic front, Malaysia's economic fundamentals continue to support the ringgit.

Ringgit Opens Higher Ahead of FOMC

BondsInterest RatesMonetary Policy

The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Tuesday amidst cautious trading ahead of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and Bank of Japan (BOJ) policy meetings, which are the focus of the market this week. At 8:00 am, the ringgit appreciated to 4.0705/4.0775 against the US dollar, up from 4.0735/4.0770 at Monday's close. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist Afzanizam Rashid stated that the market is currently focused on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision and the BOJ policy meeting. According to him, bond market movements indicate that investors now anticipate the Fed will raise interest rates by 25 basis points. Yields on three-month and six-month US Treasury bills rose to 3.97% and 4.06%, respectively, compared to 3.80% and 3.89% in previous auctions. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices hovered around US$105.68 per barrel, while Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline is expected to take several weeks to resume operations. Potential oil supply shortages could maintain pressure on global oil prices, thereby contributing to cautious trading of the ringgit.
