Community Forum

The forum is a separate discussion site that runs alongside your account. Here is how you get in, what is shared when you do, and what you can expect once you are there.

Signing In

The forum has no separate registration. It uses single sign-on, so your existing Orchard72 account is the only account you need. Forum-only passwords are switched off entirely, which means there is no second set of credentials to lose track of.

What Happens When You Join

  • Signed in already: the Join or Browse links take you straight through to the forum
  • Signed out: you are asked to sign in first, then returned to the forum automatically
  • Two-factor enabled: you complete your usual two-factor challenge before the handshake finishes
  • No account yet: the Join link sends you to registration first

If the handshake fails

Occasionally a sign-in link expires before you use it, or your session times out part-way through. When that happens you are returned to the community page with a short message explaining which of the two it was. Starting again from the Join button resolves both.

What the Forum Is Told About You

Signing in passes a small, fixed set of details to the forum so it can create and keep your profile in step. Nothing about your will, your assets or your documents is included.

Everyone

  • Your email address and a display name, plus an internal account reference
  • Your karma badges and the karma you have earned this month, so they can show on your profile
  • Which groups you belong to, for example consumers, professionals or founding members

Verified Professionals Only

  • Your professional type and primary jurisdiction, so members can see who they are talking to
  • Your average rating and review count, and whether you offer a free consultation
  • Your firm logo, used as your forum avatar

Posting under a pseudonym

Consumers can set a forum display name instead of posting under their own name, which is worth doing if you plan to discuss family circumstances. It can be changed once every 30 days. Professionals post under their professional identity, so this option is not offered to them.

Discussions are public

Most forum topics can be read by anyone, including people who are not signed in, and search engines are allowed to index them. Treat a post as public. Share the situation, not the details that identify you, your family or anyone else.

Where You Can Read and Post

Categories differ in who can read them and who can start a discussion. Reading is open by default; posting always needs you to be signed in, because anonymous posting is switched off.

  • Open to read, open to members to post: Will Planning & Review, Estate Planning & Assets, Family, Executors & Guardians, Platform & Account, and General Discussion
  • Ask a Professional: anyone can read it and members can reply, but new discussions there are opened by professionals
  • Announcements: readable by everyone and posted by the team, including the forum rules and where to get support
  • Professionals only: the Professional Lounge, for practice, platform and regulatory discussion, is limited to verified professionals and the team

Tagging Your Question

Several categories ask you to tag a discussion with the jurisdiction it concerns, from England and Wales through to Northern Ireland, Scotland and a range of countries beyond the United Kingdom. It takes a moment and it is the single most useful thing you can do to get a relevant answer, because succession rules vary so much between jurisdictions.

Your First Few Days

New accounts are eased in gently, which is a standard anti-spam measure rather than anything to do with you. To begin with you can start up to three discussions a day and post up to three replies in any one topic, links and images are held back, and new topics are reviewed before they appear. These limits lift on their own as you read and take part.

Keeping It Useful and Safe

The forum is a place to share experience, not to obtain legal advice. Nothing posted there, including by a verified professional, is advice about your own circumstances, and it is no substitute for instructing someone to look at your situation properly.

  • Flag rather than argue: every post has a Flag option that brings a moderator in
  • Persistent flags act on their own: a topic that draws enough separate flags is closed automatically pending review
  • Spam filtering runs continuously, alongside a watched-word filter
  • One account per person, no impersonation and no direct advertising, per the community guidelines
  • Verified professionals carry a badge, so you can tell a verified practitioner from a member sharing their own experience

Karma from taking part

Contributing on the forum can earn karma on your Orchard72 account, including when an answer you write is accepted as the solution. The karma programme page sets out how it is earned, the daily limit and how it can be redeemed.
