Inheritance Tax Calculator with Pension

For deaths on or after 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits generally count as part of the estate for UK inheritance tax, including qualifying non-UK schemes. For deaths before that date they generally do not. This calculator includes an undrawn pension value only where the date of death falls on or after the change.

The deceased person's personal representatives are generally responsible for identifying pensions, obtaining valuations from the schemes, reporting them and paying any inheritance tax due. The rules allow them to ask a pension scheme to pay some of the tax directly to HM Revenue & Customs.

Death-in-service benefits are generally outside the estate for inheritance tax, as are dependants' scheme pensions paid to qualifying dependants and joint-life annuities. They are therefore not inputs to this estimate.

Where the person who died was 75 or over, beneficiaries may pay income tax on pension funds they receive, after any inheritance tax. This calculator does not estimate income tax; it shows a notice when this may be relevant.

Assets passing to a spouse or civil partner are generally exempt from UK inheritance tax, and the change from 6 April 2027 does not remove that exemption for pension funds. The calculator reflects this when a surviving spouse or civil partner is indicated.
