Venezuela to Transfer $4 Billion in Gold Reserves from BOE to Federal Reserve

Inflation

The Venezuelan government and the opposition have reportedly neared an agreement to transfer central bank gold reserves worth approximately $4 billion from the Bank of England to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The Financial Times report cited four individuals familiar with the negotiations. However, Reuters has not been able to independently verify the report. Gold to Serve as Loan Collateral Under the proposal, an interim government led by Delcy Rodriguez would gain legal control over the gold. However, the reserves could not be sold immediately. Instead, the gold could potentially be used as collateral to secure government loans, including funding for reconstruction efforts following two earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Bank of England, and the British Foreign Office have not yet responded to Reuters regarding the report. The Venezuelan government and the opposition have also not yet commented. 31 Tonnes of Gold Locked in London Venezuela is believed to hold approximately 31 metric tonnes of gold in the Bank of England's vaults, an asset that has been the subject of a legal dispute for several years.
