Kyiv deploys automated turrets to defend against Russian drones

Earnings

More than a dozen automated turret systems have already been installed in Kyiv to intercept drones, with eight additional units to be deployed across the wider capital region. The city has only just begun implementing its program to roll out and maintain these turrets to defend against Russian rocket-launched drones, President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Zelensky pledged that dozens of turrets will be installed at various sites. Ukrinform reported that, according to the president, over 12 automated systems are now operational in the capital. Another eight modules , designed for 50-caliber machine guns, will be installed to protect key sites in Kyiv region. The president said he believes Russian forces will increasingly rely on rocket-launched drones and ballistic weapons, and warned that "quantity will turn into quality" regarding emerging threats. He called for a combination of defenses to counter these new risks. Zelensky also referenced Ukraine's "small anti-aircraft missile" program, noting that several types exist. "In the second half of this month, we expect to see results," he said, adding that if testing proves successful, Ukraine could quickly move to large-scale production of these missiles.

Ukraine to deploy 400 interceptor drones in October to counter Russia

Earnings

Ukraine plans to produce around 400 high-speed interceptor drones in October to counter Russian jet-powered drones. However, these drones' effectiveness still needs to be tested in real combat conditions. In a statement to foreign journalists, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets are currently shooting down between 50% and 60% of Russian jet-powered drones. At the same time, Ukraine is working to obtain weapons for these aircraft and is developing the interceptor drone program as an additional means of defense. According to Zelensky, test results for five different interceptor drone models have varied significantly. On some days, he said, their effectiveness reached about 70%, while on others it fell to just 30%. For this reason, Zelensky explained, Ukraine is not ramping up production of these drones on a massive scale yet. The priority now is to determine which models deliver consistent results. The president said around 400 drones of a specific model are expected to arrive in Ukraine in October.

Russian fighter jet reportedly shoots down Russian helicopter, killing three

Earnings

A Russian Su-35 fighter jet shot down a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter in Voronezh region after mistaking it for a drone, according to several Russian Telegram channels, including Fighterbomber , which has links to Russian military aviation. Ukrainian sources have also reported that the helicopter was downed. The insider channel Dossier Shpiona stated that the incident occurred on October 1 during a large-scale drone attack. According to the channel, the Su-35 crew mistakenly identified the Mi-8 as an unmanned aerial vehicle and opened fire. The helicopter crashed in the Anninsky district of Voronezh region, about 80 kilometers from the city of Voronezh, killing all three crew members: the pilot, navigator, and weapons operator. Fighterbomber did not directly state the cause but wrote that it was a "classic" situation, referencing identification friend-or-foe systems. The post read: "The cause is a classic one, which humanity will hardly ever overcome, despite AI, robots, neural networks, friend-or-foe systems and other wonders of science and technology.

Global Crop Prices Log Biggest Quarterly Jump Since Ukraine Invasion As Sticky Inflation Hits Grocery Bills

BondsInflation

Global Crop Prices Log Biggest Quarterly Jump Since Ukraine Invasion As Sticky Inflation Hits Grocery Bills The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index (BCOMAGSP) posted its largest quarterly gain since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, as Black Sea disruptions, a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and mounting El Niño risks have formed what could be considered a perfect storm poised to drive food prices higher. BCOMAGSP, which tracks 10 major crops including corn, soybeans, wheat, coffee, sugar, cotton, cocoa, and others, jumped 13% in the third quarter . Among individual movers, corn and wheat each climbed 15%, while soybeans gained 13%. Beyond the Russia-Ukraine fighting and disruptions to grain shipments from the Black Sea region, the next big threat to the crop space is a strengthening El Niño, on track to rank among the strongest on record. This puts various types of crops in major growing belts around the world at risk and has sent harvest yields plunging. Already, India's weakest monsoon season in a decade has added to concerns about harvests and food prices.

Trump is powerless to stop the one thing killing him at the ballot box

Inflation

If you think your energy costs are high now, the situation may be about to get a whole lot worse. With traffic in the Strait of Hormuz – normally the primary route for oil leaving the Middle East – hovering below 15% of prewar levels , oil prices have increased from US$65 a barrel before the conflict in Iran began in February 2026 to more than $100 a barrel in mid-September. When the U.S. and Israel first attacked Iran, analysts feared prices would soon reach $150 or even $200 a barrel. That hasn’t happened yet. But seven months into the conflict, with no clear end in sight, the global oil market has now largely exhausted the safety measures that exist to keep a lid on petroleum prices. As researchers who study the relationship between energy and national security , we have been following these dynamics throughout the conflict, and the oil market is now showing signs that significant price hikes – and perhaps even shortages – may be on the way. The squeeze tightens Some oil has been able to make it out of the Persian Gulf despite the closure of Hormuz.

AI, oil and rates volatility revives hedge funds dispersion trade

Earnings

Sharp swings across individual stocks, driven by shifting expectations for artificial intelligence, oil-market upheaval and rising bond yields, are creating renewed opportunities for hedge funds using equity dispersion strategies, according to a report by Bloomberg. The trade, which seeks to profit from differences in the performance of individual stocks while hedging broader market exposure, is becoming more attractive as companies within major indices increasingly move in opposite directions. AI has been a major source of that divergence. Enthusiasm over developments such as Meta Platforms’ Muse AI agent has been offset by concerns that rapid advances in AI could disrupt industries ranging from banking to travel services. At the same time, geopolitical developments surrounding conflicts in Iran and Ukraine have produced sharp moves in energy stocks, while a sustained rise in Treasury yields has increased borrowing costs. “Agentic AI winner-and-loser” trades have consequently become a particular focus for investors, according to Alex Kosoglyadov, head of flow equity-derivatives sales at Nomura Holdings.

How to Trade the EUR/USD Currency Pair on September 28? Simple Tips and Trade Review for Beginners

Earnings

Trade Review for Friday: 1H Chart of the EUR/USD Pair The EUR/USD pair on Friday tried to correct slightly again but immediately ran into the descending trend line, which lay—and still lies—quite close to price. Thus the latest attempt to correct failed. The US dollar has been rising for three full weeks, and analysts continue to point to a tightening of Federal Reserve views as the main reason for the dollar's strength. We have already said that the market cannot price the same economic factor for three weeks straight, so the problem is unlikely to be the Fed's rate hikes alone. Most likely we are dealing with an inertial, purely technical move. The dollar rises because it is being bought, and it is bought because it rises. As banal as it sounds, that appears to be the case. It is also worth noting intensified geopolitical tension in Eastern Europe in recent weeks. The world expects—or at least does not rule out—an expansion of the conflict in Ukraine, which may again force capital to flee risky territories.

Xi Will Return And Put His Foot On The Pedal To Develop Better Chips, Better Models, And The Energy To Drive That Compute

Bonds

Xi Will Return And Put His Foot On The Pedal To Develop Better Chips, Better Models, And The Energy To Drive That Compute We came into this week with a list of things to think about with the Fed Behind Us , and a SITREP focusing on the Houthis vs Saudi Arabia . We also kicked off the week with a preview on CNBC. Our “official scoring” was stocks did well, Bessent faced setbacks on bonds and the yen, and for the world, well, not as much clarity as we could have hoped for. I was going to go with i instead of ? but √−1 seemed overly complex vs ? even if it is more reflective of the current complex state of the world! We weighed in on some possibilities in Let’s Make a Deal: NYC Style . We started off with a bang, with the Greenland deal and a pre-summit trade “status quo” extension, but finished the week with a lot of wasted opportunities. The confusing messaging with Ukraine and Russia (confusing on everything except a desire for diesel prices to go lower). The contradictory messaging with Iran: public threats, closed door meetings allegedly leading to a deal, the terms of which seemed to be rejected by the President on Friday after the close.
