Iran Keeps Door Open for Hormuz Reopening, Awaits Trump's Response

Inflation

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expects Tehran to receive an official response from the United States on Tuesday regarding a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal was discussed via Qatari intermediaries during indirect negotiations between Iran and the US. Araghchi stated that Qatar would present the matter to the US side before an official response is conveyed to Tehran. Reopening of Hormuz Hinges on Iran's Conditions Araghchi stated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on meeting several conditions that Tehran has put forward to the US. Iran's proposal includes a seven-day ceasefire in Iran and Lebanon, the lifting of US naval blockades on Iranian ports, the removal of sanctions on oil exports, and the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad. In return, Tehran is prepared to reopen the shipping route and resume negotiations regarding its nuclear program. The Strait of Hormuz is a focal point because this strategic waterway carries a significant portion of the world's energy supply.

US stocks: US market falls as higher oil prices, Treasury yields weigh

Interest RatesInflation

US stocks fell on Monday as oil prices and Treasury yields increased, with investors weighing uncertainty over the prospects for an Iran war peace deal and the impact on the Federal Reserve's rate path.Crude prices had jumped after US President Donald Trump rejected a peace deal from Iran but pared gains on expectations that Qatari mediators would hold talks with the two countries to find a possible deal. After retreating from highs at the start of the month, oil prices have accelerated higher in recent days as hopes that a peace deal may be on the horizon have diminished. The rising prices of crude and diesel fuel have fanned inflation worries and pushed US Treasury yields higher, along with comments from Fed officials indicating that more rate hikes might be needed if price pressures fail to moderate after the central bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points earlier this month."Iran is driving oil prices, and oil prices are driving inflation, and inflation is driving interest rates," said Jack Ablin, chief investment strategist and founding partner at Cresset Capital Management in Chicago. "We're getting to a point now where interest rates are looking pretty attractive relative to equities, which is really the first time in close to 20 years, so that's something that we're certainly paying attention to.""It's less of an earnings story right now than it is a valuation story," he said. "When you get an asset class that has been fighting with one arm tied behind its back for 20 years, now all of a sudden it's looking pretty competitive."According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 lost 59.00 points, or 0.76%, to end at 7,684.41 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 246.62 points, or 0.91%, to 26,822.09.

Most Gulf bourses end higher as investors weigh Fed rate hike

Interest RatesInflationMonetary Policy

Most Gulf bourses closed higher on Thursday despite mounting geopolitical friction, as investors weighed the U.S. Federal Reserve’s first interest rate hike in more than three years. Most Gulf Cooperation Council central banks raised their benchmark rates after the US Fed’s quarter-point increase on Wednesday. Regional currencies are pegged to the dollar, except for the Kuwaiti dinar, which is tied to a basket that includes the dollar, so Gulf monetary policy routinely mirrors the Fed. Saudi Arabia raised its repo and reverse repo rates by 25 basis points to 4.50% and 4.00%, respectively. The United Arab Emirates raised its overnight deposit facility base rate by 25 bps to 3.9%, while Oman raised its repo rate by the same margin to 4.5%. Qatar’s central bank also raised key rates by 25 bps. Low shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continued to weigh on sentiment, while attention remains fixed on U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Gulf leaders next week. Still, strong local fundamentals could continue to underpin markets, said Milad Azar Market analyst at XTB MENA.
