Capital Markets
Staff Reporter NAMIBIA is set to gain greater exposure to international investors through JPMorgan’s new frontier-market local-currency government bond index, which will track nearly US$330 billion in sovereign debt across 26 developing economies. The JPMorgan Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets (GBI-EM Edge) is expected to launch by the end of September and will include Namibia alongside 25 other countries, placing the country within a benchmark designed to attract global institutional investment into frontier debt markets. The index will cover local-currency government bonds from Albania, Angola, Bangladesh, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. JPMorgan’s Global Index Research report indicates that African economies will account for almost 45% of the index, giving the continent the largest regional representation.
