Malaysia Acts as a ‘Cash Cow’ for Neighboring Nations; Billions Sent Home Annually

Malaysia is more than just an employment destination for millions of foreign workers; it is also a vital source of remittances for several Asian economies, particularly Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Data from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) shows that outbound e-remittance transactions reached RM31.6 billion in 2025, a surge of 70.1% compared to the previous year. This figure represents 51.8% of all outbound remittances processed by licensed service providers. Based on this ratio, total outbound remittances via licensed providers are estimated at around RM61 billion for 2025. BNM identifies Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Myanmar as the three primary corridors for remittances originating from Malaysia. Bangladesh Receives Billions from Malaysia Data from Bangladesh Bank indicates that the country received US$35.59 billion in remittances during the 2025/26 fiscal year. Of this total, approximately US$3.4 billion originated from Malaysia, accounting for nearly 10% of Bangladesh's total remittance inflows.

Vietnam, Myanmar Deepen Defence and Economic Cooperation

Vietnam and Myanmar have agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation, with both countries elevating the sector as a key pillar of their bilateral relations. The agreement was reached on Saturday when Vietnamese leader To Lam hosted Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Hanoi during the Myanmar leader’s first official visit to Vietnam as president. According to a statement issued by the Vietnamese government, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in military training, exchanges between young officers, search-and-rescue operations and disaster response. They also pledged to enhance information sharing and coordination in the fight against crime. “Vietnam stands ready to share its experience in national development, ensuring economic security and fostering sustainable growth,” Lam was quoted as saying during the talks. The two countries further reaffirmed their commitment not to allow individuals or organisations to use their respective territories to conduct activities against the other country.
