IMF Warns Latvia Faces Rising Fiscal Pressures as Growth Slows

Inflation

WASHINGTON, DC — September 21, 2026 — Latvia’s economic recovery is facing a combination of slowing growth, persistent inflation, weak productivity and rising government spending pressures, according to the International Monetary Fund, which said the country needs a credible medium-term fiscal strategy while accelerating reforms to investment, labor markets, financial markets and energy security. The IMF Executive Board concluded its 2026 Article IV consultation with Latvia on a lapse-of-time basis and endorsed the staff appraisal without a meeting. Latvian authorities consented to publication of the staff report. Latvia’s real GDP growth rebounded to 2.1 percent in 2025 , after no growth in 2024. The recovery was driven by private investment and public consumption. The IMF expects growth to slow to 1.8 percent in 2026 . Strong public investment, recovering consumption and strong credit growth are expected to partly offset the effects of the war in the Middle East. At the same time, persistent supply disruptions affecting oil, gas, fertilizers and petrochemicals are expected to push up headline inflation.

For a company that rarely generates dramatic headlines, a discretionary cash return is a reasonable way to remind the market it exists. The business runs the dominant online classifieds portals across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, covering automotive, real estate, jobs and general goods. These are the sites people in those markets simply use, in the way that a single portal often becomes the default in a country too small to sustain three of them. Why Small Markets Produce Outsized Economics Classifieds businesses obey a brutal logic. Buyers go where the listings are, sellers list where the buyers are, and the leader tends to take almost everything.
