Croatia Collects €17.3 Billion – But Spends €19 Billion in Just Six Months

Inflation

Croatia's state budget brought in €17.3 billion during the first six months of 2026 – but spending reached €19 billion , new government figures have revealed. Budget revenues jumped 15.5 percent compared with the first half of last year, while expenditure increased by €2.1 billion, or 12.2 percent. The figures come as Croatia's economy continues to expand, with GDP growing 1.9 percent year-on-year during the first half of 2026. VAT Revenue Jumps One of the biggest boosts to government coffers came from VAT, with revenues reaching €6.1 billion , an increase of 11.8 percent. The Government attributed the rise to stronger personal, investment and tourism consumption – as well as the effects of inflation. Social contribution revenues reached €3.1 billion, up 10.9 percent, helped by rising wages and employment. Meanwhile, EU and international funding almost doubled year-on-year to €2.4 billion as projects financed through European programmes and Croatia's National Recovery and Resilience Plan gathered pace.

Diesel Shock Looms in Croatia: Prices Could Hit Record €1.95 a Litre Without Government Intervention

Inflation

Croatian motorists could be facing a painful new record at the pumps, with diesel potentially soaring to €1.95 per litre from Tuesday unless the Government steps in. And behind the threatened price shock is a much bigger global energy crisis, with Donald Trump’s continuing war with Iran , disruption to vital Middle Eastern oil routes and pressure on refinery supplies sending diesel prices soaring around the world. The conflict launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February has dragged on for more than six months, disrupting energy markets and restricting normal oil movements through the Strait of Hormuz , one of the world's most important energy corridors. Oil prices have again climbed above $100 a barrel amid renewed fighting and attacks on energy infrastructure, feeding directly into higher petrol and diesel costs around the world. Trump Feeling the Pain at the Pumps The effects are being felt particularly sharply in the United States, where diesel has risen above $6 per gallon , putting pressure on farmers, transport companies and consumers.

Croatia’s Inflation Bites Again as Transport Costs Rocket 13.5 Percent and Household Bills Soar

Inflation

Croatians are once again feeling the squeeze as inflation unexpectedly accelerated in August – with transport costs surging by a staggering 13.5 percent and household expenses climbing by more than 10 percent. New figures from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) show consumer prices were 4.2 percent higher in August 2026 than a year earlier , bringing an abrupt end to three consecutive months of easing inflation. And the latest figure is even worse than first thought. DZS had initially estimated annual inflation at 4.1 percent, but has now revised that figure upwards to 4.2 percent . Prices also increased by 0.4 percent in just one month , between July and August. Inflation Was Falling – Now It's Going Back Up The figures mark an unwelcome change of direction for household budgets. Annual inflation had fallen steadily from 5.8 percent in April to 5.2 percent in May, 4.5 percent in June and finally 3.9 percent in July. But August broke that three-month downward trend. And behind the headline figure are some eye-watering increases in everyday costs.
