From the shores of Lake Chad to the banks of the Congo and Oubangui rivers, the disease is spreading in overcrowded displacement sites, refugee camps and underserved urban neighborhoods, threatening lives and livelihoods. Behind the numbers are families like that of Aisa Maani Tela and Kabiru Mohammed in north-east Nigeria . Borno State alone has recorded more than 59,000 suspected and confirmed cases and over 300 deaths as of late August. In Monguno, where thousands of displaced families live in overcrowded camps, Aisa remembers the night her daughters Kellu and Zara suddenly fell ill. "I kept thinking about how quickly children can die from illness," she said.
