TSX Advances as Oil Rally Stalls

Inflation

The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 1% to close at 35,503 as the recent oil rally lost momentum, easing worries about energy-driven inflation and driving Canadian bond yields lower. Softer-than-expected US payroll data further supported rate-sensitive sectors, with markets dialing back expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. Financials advanced, led by a 1.1% gain in CIBC and a 2% rise in Great-West Lifeco. Technology shares also moved higher, mirroring strength in the Wall Street AI trade: Shopify added 1.7%, while Celestica jumped 3.9%. Mining stocks rose despite a pullback in gold prices, as the weaker US jobs report tempered Fed tightening expectations and improved the outlook for the metal. Agnico Eagle gained 2.1%, and WPM rose 2.6%. On the policy front, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will fast-track approval for a proposed crude oil export pipeline to the West Coast, a project seen as central to efforts to diversify the country’s economy away from its heavy reliance on the United States.

Swonger Says Trade Barriers Will Hurt Spirits Industry

Inflation

Swonger Says Trade Barriers Will Hurt Spirits Industry Chris Swonger, President and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, says the US represents 93% of the Canadian spirits industry and warns that restrictions on cross-border trade will hurt the hospitality economy on both sides of the border. Swonger says the spirits industry has thrived with no trade barriers and zero-to-zero tariffs, and says the sector is also facing pressure from GLP-1 medications, younger consumers drinking less and inflationary challenges. He speaks with Kailey Leinz and Joe Mathieu on Bloomberg’s "Balance of Power." -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Week Ahead - Oct 12th

InflationMonetary Policy

In the coming week, markets will remain focused on the US–Iran standoff, with particular attention on any progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz and de-escalating the conflict in the Middle East. Government bond markets will also stay in the spotlight after the recent sharp rise in sovereign yields. In the United States, investors will closely examine the FOMC minutes, the ISM Services PMI, and the preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index for further insight into the economic outlook and the Federal Reserve’s policy trajectory. Key data releases elsewhere will include German factory orders and trade figures, Eurozone producer price inflation, Japan’s consumer confidence and machine tool orders, Australia’s consumer confidence, and Canada’s employment and trade data. Inflation reports from Mexico and Brazil will also be followed carefully. In monetary policy, the Reserve Bank of India is set to announce its latest decision. In addition, the upcoming OPEC meeting and political developments around Brazil’s presidential election will remain important drivers for global markets.

TSX Futures Edge Higher

Inflation

TSX futures inched higher on Friday as the recent oil rally paused, easing worries about energy-driven inflation and helping push Canadian bond yields lower. Softer-than-expected U.S. payroll data also lent support to rate-sensitive stocks, as markets further scaled back expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. The U.S. economy added 29,000 jobs in September, far below the consensus forecast of 90,000 and a sharp slowdown from the 133,000 jobs created in August. In commodities, gold prices were little changed but remained on course for a second consecutive weekly decline, maintaining pressure on mining stocks. Prime Minister Carney said Canada will fast-track approval of a proposed crude oil export pipeline to the West Coast, describing it as a key element of his strategy to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on the United States. Trump Blocks Canadian Imports: U.S.-Canada Conflict Spirals Out of Control!

Inflation

On Tuesday, the White House administration officially enforced import restrictions on Canadian-made vehicles, dairy products, and various alcoholic beverages valued at approximately $19.9 billion. This crackdown marks the latest phase in the escalating tit-for-tat tariff dispute between the two North American neighbors, affecting everyday consumer goods ranging from high-powered motorcycles (exceeding 800cc) to beer, wine, and whiskey. Although President Donald Trump has hinted at the potential to reach a "fair deal" within the coming weeks, he has maintained a confrontational tone, claiming that Ottawa frequently takes advantage of the U.S. However, statements from trade officials on both sides reveal a reality where negotiations remain deadlocked. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that Washington feels no urgency to reach an agreement, given that the U.S. continues to enjoy uninterrupted supplies of critical commodities—such as oil and gas—from Canada. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc condemned Washington's actions as illegal tariffs that harm local businesses and workers, asserting that Ottawa would not wait for any deal that compromises national sovereignty.

TSX Edges Lower Amid Global Bond Selloff

Interest RatesInflation

The S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped toward the 35,000 level as a renewed global bond selloff drove borrowing costs to multi-decade highs and oil prices remained volatile. The continued rout in sovereign debt pressured broader equity markets, with the Canadian 10-year yield trimming earlier declines on Thursday but still holding near multi-year peaks. Crude prices climbed further on reports of tightening fuel supplies in China, stoking concerns about persistent, energy-driven inflation. The prospect of higher-for-longer interest rates pushed yields up and weighed on rate- and credit-sensitive sectors. Major Canadian banks declined, with RBC, BMO, and Scotiabank each losing about 1%, while TD Bank and CIBC fell roughly 0.5%. The mining sector also weakened as gold pared earlier gains: Barrick slipped more than 0.5% and Wheaton Precious Metals dropped about 1%. First Quantum was a notable outlier, rebounding nearly 5% after plunging 15.3% in the prior session. The recovery came after a Panamanian government commission recommended formal negotiations on a new framework for the Cobre Panamá mine, a shift from Panama’s earlier call for the mine’s orderly closure.
