When wildlife becomes an economy of conservation

Earnings

Siddharth Roy (siddharth001.roy@gmail.com) W hen Assam's forests reopen after the monsoon, it is tempting to think of October 2 as simply the beginning of another tourist season. It is more consequential than that. The reopening of Manas on October 2, Kaziranga on October 3 and Pobitora on October 13 marks the return of visitors to some of India's most important and ecologically valuable wildlife landscapes in the Northeast. The opportunity is to turn this seasonal rush into a conservation economy in which tourism pays for protection, creates livelihoods and gives communities a stake in healthy forests. Assam already has the natural capital. The state has five national parks, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and more than 180 mammal species. Kaziranga and Manas are complex floodplain, grassland, forest and river systems supporting rhinos, tigers, elephants, wild buffalo, golden langurs and pygmy hogs. Kaziranga covers about 858 square kilometres, while Manas is linked to Bhutan's Royal Manas National Park.

India excluded as US expands visa bond rule to 50 countries

Bonds

Photo: @ians_india/X Washington, Oct 3 : The United States has listed 50 countries whose nationals are subject to visa bonds of up to $20,000 for business and tourist visas, with India excluded from the requirement but Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal among the South Asian countries covered. The State Department published an updated list Friday of countries whose nationals are required to post bonds if they are otherwise found eligible for B1/B2 visas. Under the programme, an applicant travelling on a passport issued by one of the listed countries must post a bond of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000. The amount is determined by a consular officer during the visa interview, according to the State Department. The requirement does not apply to Indian passport holders. Bangladesh and Nepal have been subject to the requirement since January 21, while Bhutan has been covered since January 1, according to the State Department list. The list also includes several countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Central Asia and the Pacific.

Who will pay for the Himalayas?

Earnings

NEPAL FLOOD IS A CARBON CRIME Dr. Lakshmi Niwas Kalwar T he flash flood that buried Rasuwa on 26th August 2026 was not caused by Nepal. Nepal emits 0.1% of global carbon. The flood was caused by us — by the world that emits 54 billion tonnes of CO2 every year — and the Himalayas are now collecting the bill. When a glacier collapses in Tibet and 1,377 die in Nepal and 5,130 go missing, we call it a “natural disaster.” It is not. It is a predictable outcome of a 1.8-degree warming of the Hindu Kush Himalaya, which is warming twice as fast as the global average. This is climate injustice in its starkest form. 1. The science is clear; the victim is not the culprit The Bhotekoshi flood was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche, a classic GLOF-like event amplified by permafrost thaw. ICIMOD has warned for a decade — there are 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. August’s temperature in the region was 3.2°C above normal. Permafrost that held mountains together for 10,000 years melted in a week.
