Unitel: Small Investors, Big Losses and the Risk of Capture

Capital Markets

By September 24, Unitel shares were trading at 28,000 kwanzas on Angola’s stock exchange, down 30 per cent from the July offering price of 40,040 kwanzas. In less than two months, roughly 300 kwanzas had disappeared from the market value of every 1,000 invested. For a country seeking to persuade its citizens to become shareholders, this is a sobering introduction to the stock market. The 15 per cent stake sold for 300.3bn kwanzas now had a market value of 210bn kwanzas. The consequences extend beyond portfolios. According to Valor Económico, some subscribers sold land and other property to buy shares. Others borrowed from banks, expecting quick returns to cover their repayments. Some are now struggling to service those debts. An unrealised investment loss can become a very real household emergency when creditors demand payment. Vasco Januário, an executive director of Angola’s Capital Markets Commission, has emphasised investors’ inadequate financial literacy. [...]

Angola’s Central Bank Slashes Key Rate To 14.75%

Earnings

Angola’s central bank has cut its key lending rate by 100 basis points to 14.75 per cent, its third consecutive reduction, following a further moderation in inflation. The Bank of Angola reduced its policy rate from 15.75 per cent on Tuesday, after cutting it by 125 basis points in July and 50 basis points in May. Inflation in the southern African oil-producing country eased to 8.78 per cent year-on-year in August from 9.33 per cent in July, marking the first single-digit reading since 2015. READ ALSO: Nigeria Pledges Support for Nigerian-Owned Investments in Angola The central bank retained its year-end inflation forecast at 8.6 per cent but raised its 2026 growth forecast sharply to 6.15 per cent from 3.6 per cent in July. It attributed the stronger growth outlook to improved performance in both the oil and non-oil sectors. Angola’s economy has also benefited from elevated global energy prices linked to the conflict involving Iran. The International Monetary Fund has urged policymakers to use oil revenue windfalls to reduce debt and build fiscal buffers.

Angola Trims Key Policy Rate to 14.75%

Inflation

The National Bank of Angola cut its key interest rate by 100 basis points to 14.75% at its August 2026 meeting, marking a third consecutive reduction and bringing the rate to its lowest level since 2016. Policymakers attributed the move to a sustained disinflationary trend and an improving economic outlook, despite lingering uncertainty related to the conflict in the Middle East. The annual inflation rate eased to 8.78% in August 2026 from 9.33% in July, its lowest reading since April 2015 and an extension of the downward trajectory that began in mid-2024. At the same time, economic growth accelerated sharply, with GDP expanding 8.74% year-on-year in Q2 2026 — the strongest pace since Q2 2022 and a notable pickup from 5.32% in Q1. Angola’s Central Bank Delivers Fresh Rate Cut as Benchmark Drops to 14.75%

Earnings

Angola has lowered its key interest rate to 14.75%, down from 15.75%, according to data updated on 15 September 2026. The latest move marks a further easing of monetary conditions, as the central bank continues to adjust its policy stance on a month-over-month basis. The current figure, measured against the previous month’s 15.75%, underscores a one-percentage-point reduction in the benchmark rate. In the context of the month-over-month comparison, the “actual” reflects this latest cut, while the “previous” refers to how the rate had shifted in the month before the latest change. The decision is likely to be closely watched by investors and businesses assessing Angola’s cost of borrowing and broader financial conditions. Market participants will be monitoring upcoming data releases to gauge whether this downward path in rates will continue in the near term. JPMorgan to launch ‘frontier’ GBI-EM Edge

FX Market

LONDON — JPMorgan is set to launch its long-awaited "frontier" market local currency government bond index by end-September, giving investors a new benchmark for nearly $330 billion of debt across some of the world's fastest-growing economies. Coming 15 years after its hard-currency NEXGEM frontier index, the Wall Street bank's new "GBI-EM Edge" benchmark will cover bonds from 26 countries, a source familiar with the now-finalized plans told Reuters. Those set to have the biggest weightings in the new index include Egypt, Vietnam, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria and Sri Lanka, many of which have enjoyed strong market rallies in recent years following crises. According to the World Bank, frontier economies are home to a fifth of the world's population but account for just 3.1 percent of global capital flows and less than 5 percent of global GDP. Their populations, however, are expected to increase by 800 million over the next 25 years — more than the rest of the world combined — meaning they will play an increasingly important role in global economic growth.
